Proton launches end-to-end encrypted alternative to Google Docs

Swiss privacy company Proton today released Proton Docs, which the company is pitching to customers as a “secure alternative to Google Drive and Docs.”

Proton Docs offers users the ability to create, edit, and collaborate on end-to-end encrypted (E2E) documents, all integrated with Proton's cloud storage product, Drive.

The implementation of E2E means that even Proton cannot access document content or metadata (such as file names), and user data is stored on Swiss servers and protected by strict Swiss privacy laws.

Following Proton's recent acquisition of encrypted note-taking app Standard Notes, Docs integrates many of the company's popular features, including full support for Markdown, rich text, code blocks, and checklists. Here are some highlights from Proton's press release:

Collaborative Cursor and Presence: With collaborative cursor, you can see who is viewing the document in real time, making teamwork more intuitive. Invite Collaborators: Easily invite anyone to collaborate on a document. Participants who don't have a Proton account will be asked to create one for free, ensuring a safe environment for everyone.

In keeping with its all-privacy approach, the company says all documents, keystrokes and even cursor movements are encrypted end-to-end in real time. “Unlike Google Docs, Proton's promise not to collect user data for any purpose means your information remains strictly private,” the company promises.

Proton Docs is currently a web application, but Proton says it will eventually be offered as a dedicated app across platforms. In addition to Docs, Proton Drive includes a calendar, file storage, a password manager, and more.

To use Docs, you'll need a free Proton Drive account. Proton says it's rolling out Docs starting today, with the feature available to all users in the coming days.
