Currently, most AI-enabled robots use cameras to understand their surroundings and learn new tasks, but it will also become easier to train robots using voice, helping them adapt to tasks and environments where visibility is limited.

While vision is important, some everyday tasks are more useful with sound, such as listening to onions sizzling on the stove to make sure a pan is at the right temperature. But training robots with voice has so far only been done in highly controlled laboratory environments, and the technology has lagged behind other high-velocity robot-teaching methods.

Researchers at Stanford University's Robotics and Embodied AI Lab set out to change that. They first built a system to collect audio data, then used this data to train a robotic arm how to perform tasks on its own. The team's new training algorithm helps the robot glean cues from audio signals to act more effectively. Read the full story.
