Google revealed that its greenhouse gas emissions increased by 48% since 2019, largely due to the energy demands of its data centers.

Google's carbon emissions will increase 48% from 2019, reaching 14.3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions in 2023. According to the company's 2024 Environmental Report, 24% of its total emissions, or more than 3.4 million tonnes, come from market-based sources, i.e. purchased electricity.

This significant increase is likely to pose a major obstacle for Google, as the company plans to achieve net-zero emissions by 2030. While the company has taken aggressive steps to achieve this goal, data center growth is outpacing the supply of clean energy sources, despite its push to use carbon-free power in its offices and other facilities. Additionally, some regions where Google operates, such as Asia Pacific, are highly dependent on energy sources that are not carbon-neutral, forcing the company to purchase “dirty” electricity until clean energy projects are operational.

The surge in demand for AI computing has made data centers a popular and growing business. Many companies, including Google, OpenAI, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, and even Musk's X, are jumping on the bandwagon and procuring millions of GPUs to make their AI dreams come true. However, it's important to keep in mind that just one modern data center GPU consumes up to 3.7 MWh of electricity per year. Multiply this by the roughly 3.9 million GPUs that will be sold in 2023 alone, and it's equivalent to the electricity demand of more than 1.3 million homes.

Industry experts currently believe that AI growth will be constrained by power infrastructure such as power plants, long-distance transmission lines, substations, etc. Data centers are expected to grow 24.6% year over year through 2028, and the power grid will have to keep up, especially since global electricity production has only grown 2.5% annually over the past decade.

But companies can't just build any power plant to meet their electricity needs. Instead, many are turning to clean energy sources like wind, solar and nuclear plants to provide more electricity while preventing carbon emissions from growing. Microsoft is investing in research into small modular nuclear power plants to power the data centers of the future.
