Forget Pixel 9! Google Pixel 10 hits a major milestone – here's what you need to know

The Google Pixel 9 hasn't even arrived yet, but we're starting to hear news about a new chipset that will power next year's smartphones, specifically the Pixel 10, which appears to just be finalized.

The upcoming Tensor G5 silicon will apparently be Google's first chip not based on the Samsung Exynos chipset, and will reportedly be fully custom manufactured using TSMC's 3nm process, the same process as Apple and Qualcomm's mobile chips.

And according to the China Times, the Tensor G5 chipset has entered the “tape-out” stage, which is the point at which the final version of the chip is finished and ready to enter the manufacturing stage.

While this seems like pretty rapid progress, it's crucial that the Tensor G5 is ready ahead of more serious work on the Pixel 10. Firstly, the fact that the chip has been made means that Google can get to work testing the G5 to ensure it's working properly.

The validation time is crucial here, because this is the first chip to use Google's own architecture entirely, rather than relying on a Samsung chip. Previous Tensor chips had the assurance that whatever Exynos chip they were based on would already work, but this forces Google to play by the rules of this off-the-shelf processor.

The fully customized Tensor chip gives Google complete control over every aspect of Pixel development. Just like Apple did with its A-series and M-series chips, Google-made Tensor means Android software can better optimize the Pixel hardware, hopefully delivering a better and more efficient experience in the process.

Plus, with AI set to play a bigger role in mobile tech in the future, having more control over the hardware should improve the on-device experience, and the switch to a 3nm process will improve performance while also reducing power consumption — both very good things, especially considering that Google has been pretty mediocre at both so far.

Of course, there's still a long way to go before the Pixel 10 launches, which won't arrive until late 2025. In the meantime, we can all eagerly await the launch of the Pixel 9 series, which Google recently announced on August 13. However, this smartphone is expected to run on the Tensor G4, meaning that all the benefits of the Google-made chip will be lost on us.
