Apple will reportedly announce partnership with Google at iPhone 16 event

Apple is gearing up to release a suite of AI features (Apple Intelligence) and the iPhone maker has been meeting with a number of companies in the AI ​​space.

One of the companies Apple could potentially strike a deal with is Google, one of its biggest rivals in the mobile space.

According to a new report from Bloomberg's Apple insider Mark Gurman, Apple is set to announce the addition of Google Gemini to the iPhone at its annual event in September.

This fall's Apple event will not only unveil the new iPhone 16, but also Apple Intelligence built into the new iOS 18. Apple already announced a partnership with OpenAI at its annual WWDC event in June.

However, Apple is reportedly considering offering users a choice of multiple AI models in addition to Apple Intelligence (with alternative models being used if Apple Intelligence isn't suitable for a particular AI task).

Along with OpenAI, Apple has reportedly met with leaders in the AI ​​field, including Google, Anthropic, and Meta. Gurman reported in March that Apple and Google met to discuss integrating Google's Gemini AI models into Apple's upcoming AI features. The meeting appears to have gone well, with Gurman expecting Apple to announce the Gemini integration in September.

But talks between Apple and Meta about the Llama AI model didn't go well, according to Gurman. Apple is reportedly concerned about partnering with Facebook and Instagram's parent company. Gurman said Meta reached out to Apple to spark discussions about integrating Llama into iOS, but Apple wasn't interested in meeting formally with the company for further discussions.

Apple has previously criticized Meta's privacy practices, and those concerns are likely one of the reasons Apple is opting out of Meta's AI offering. Gurman also said that Apple doesn't believe Meta's AI models are as good as those offered by OpenAI, Google, or Anthropic.

Apple's entry into the AI ​​space was much slower than its competitors. But Apple's dominance in the mobile space has worked to its advantage. Gurman reported last month that Apple and OpenAI are not exchanging money as part of their AI partnership. Instead, OpenAI will provide services to Apple customers in exchange for mass distribution on Apple devices.
