Renewal: A look back at UH's efforts to support innovation in Houston

Editor's note: This summer break week, we're revisiting our conversation with Ramanan Krishnamoorthi, vice chancellor for energy and innovation at the University of Houston. This conversation was originally conducted in May 2023.

Last week, the University of Houston announced a new partnership with the Houston Angel Network to further activate investors with deep ties to the university.

The new partnership will be based at the University of Hawaii's Tech Bridge, a hub near the campus aimed at supporting technology commercialization, industry partnerships and startup development.

Investors play a vital role in the startup ecosystem, and this initiative gives alumni a shortcut to becoming angel investors. “Our vision is to have even more investors with deep ties to UH who support world-class innovation in our local community and beyond,” Ramanan Krishnamoorthi, the university’s vice chancellor for energy and innovation, said in a news release.

Last year, Krishnamoorthi joined the Houston Innovators Podcast to share an overview of the University's efforts to implement initiatives that serve Houston's innovation community, including announcing plans to develop a new central campus hub for innovation.

“What universities really need today is to bring innovation, of which technology transfer is a part, and then connect it to real-world challenges to provide what the world needs, which is new programs or intrapreneurship programs for talented people to be innovative and entrepreneurial,” Krishnamoorthi says in the episode.

For Krishnamoorthi, much of what's happening on campus directly aligns with what's happening in the city of Houston as a whole: There's a need to encourage more innovation and entrepreneurship, and Houston already has what it takes, he says.

“As a city, we're known for solving problems,” he told the show. “We don't come here to talk about things, we get things done. That's the trademark of this city.”
