British man jailed for carrying replica Legend of Zelda sword in public

LONDON – A British man has been sentenced to four months in prison and fined $196 for brandishing a replica sword from the Nintendo computer video game “The Legend of Zelda” in the street.

A police statement said Anthony Bray, 48, was identified by Warwickshire Police this week and convicted of possessing a bladed article in public.

Police said the item in question was a miniature replica of the Master Sword from the “Legend of Zelda” video game, with a six-inch blade.

The Master Sword is an iconic weapon that frequently appears in the Legend of Zelda series, a famous prop from the game series that was released in the 1980s and is beloved by gamers around the world. According to a fan website for the game, which follows the young hero Link and other characters, the sword features a blue and yellow hilt and sheath and has the power to defeat evil and destroy magical barriers.

Police said they approached Bray on June 8 after he was seen on CCTV walking with something in his hand in the centre of the market town of Nuneaton, central England.

Police said Bray claimed the sword was used as an online toy he had purchased to keep his hands active.

According to the statement, officers tried to explain to Bray that, despite its intended use, it is in fact a sharp, pointed object that could be used as a weapon and could scare others into using it on it.

When questioned by police, Bray stressed he had not intended to use the sophisticated sword as a weapon but accepted it could be perceived as a threat by others, police said.

“We have a zero tolerance policy towards the use of knives in public places and Bray has breached this,” Detective Sergeant Fern Spellman, from the Patrol Investigations Unit, said. “It is possible to find a fidget spinner that doesn't have a six-inch blade and it is possible to walk down the street without having a knife in front of you,” she added.

Warwickshire Police spokesman Sam Ingram told The Washington Post in an email on Thursday that the replica Master Sword had been destroyed.
