British man given four-month prison sentence for possessing replica Legend of Zelda sword – The National

Many video game enthusiasts appreciate the novelty of owning a replica of a weapon wielded by their favorite character, but one Briton is facing prison time for possessing a copy of a Legend of Zelda sword in public.

Warwickshire Police announced that they arrested Anthony Bray, 48, in Nuneaton on June 8 after he was seen on CCTV in possession of a replica of the Master Sword from the popular video game series.

Bray was carrying the six-inch blade in a blue and gold sheath which would pop out at the press of a button. Warwickshire Police announced on Tuesday that Bray had been sentenced to four months in prison for carrying a blade on a public road and in a built-up area.

Authorities allege Bray “approached officers in a manner that allowed them to see items he was holding,” which led to his arrest.

Bray told police the sword he bought online was a fidget – a general term for a toy-like device designed to keep the user's hands busy.

“Officers attempted to explain to Mr Bray that, despite its intended purpose, it was in fact a sharp, pointed object which could be used as a weapon and cause fear to others that it might be used against them,” Warwickshire Police said in a press release.

Bray told officers the sword could be perceived as a threat by others but he had no intention of using it as a weapon.

He will be sentenced on June 28 and ordered to pay victim surcharge of 154 pounds (about $270 Canadian).

“We have zero tolerance for knives in public places and Bray has breached this,” Sergeant Fern Spellman said. “It's possible to find a fidget spinner that doesn't have a six-inch blade. No one should have to walk down the street with a blade in front of them.”

Spellman said Bray could have avoided the entire incident “with a little more self-awareness.”

According to the UK parliament, there were around 50,500 crimes involving “sharp objects” in the UK last year through to March 2023, a 4.7% increase on the previous year.

However, it is legal to own a replica sword in the UK, provided the owner is over 18. The sword must be kept in the owner's home and may not be taken out in public unless there is a valid reason, such as traveling to or from an event where the sword is used as a prop in a sporting or re-enactment performance. The sword must be fully covered when in transit.

The UK bans the sale and import of several bladed items and weapons, including butterfly knives, stealth knives and swords with curved blades longer than 50cm (except antique swords made before 1954).
