Virginia Tech creates immersive exhibit to mark 80th anniversary of Normandy landings | Virginia Tech News

We are working on a project at the Normandy Landings National Memorial in Bedford, Virginia to tell the story of the Normandy landings in celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings. This story will be projected on the Normandy Landings National Memorial. We thought that working with local institutions, especially non-profits, was a good fit for Virginia Tech's mission as a land grant university, so we started talking to the Normandy Landings National Memorial Foundation to do something special. They knew that we had done a large-scale projection project on campus and wanted to do something special here. The Normandy landings are such an epic story. So how do you make that happen in, say, 25 minutes? So there was a lot of collaboration and brainstorming. All of a sudden, a runner sticks his head in the opening of the tent and we said, this is it, let's go. My role was primarily creative direction and creative team project lead. Tanner Upthegrove was the technical and logistics lead, co-project lead, and did all of the audio engineering for the project. Ethan Candelario, a master motion designer, did all the motion work on this project; Hershal Piranha, a graduate assistant in the Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology, helped a lot behind the scenes with digital modeling; and Gustavo Araoz, production coordinator; and Carter Roberts, an undergraduate in the school who plays RTS, who did the original music composition and sound design. “The ground was shaking. It was just shaking like crazy.” On a professional level. I mean, it's incredible to get this job my senior year. It's nothing short of an honor, and it almost feels surreal that I'm doing something of this magnitude at this young age in my life. What's really special about this project is working on-site at the monument. It's a huge venue, so there are a lot of challenges, but also a lot of creative opportunities.
