Google Photos now lets you retrieve hidden photos faster

Previously, you had to dig through the Utility section of Google Photos to find the locked folder, which was a bit of a pain. With the latest update, this hidden section is now at the very front of the Library tab, alongside Favorites, Archive, and Trash. The change was first spotted by 9to5Google in version 6.89 of the Android app, and is now rolling out to iOS users as well.

The update replaces the Utility button at the top of the Library tab with a locked folder, and Google has already updated its support documentation to point out the new settings.

For the uninitiated, Locked Folder is a safe where you can store your sensitive media. Password protected and hidden from your main gallery and other apps, it lets you safely store the photos and videos you choose. However, it was previously a bit hard to find, buried deep in the menu system and requiring several steps to access.

The aim of this update is to make accessing locked folders faster and more convenient. The web version of Photos already had a locked folder in the navigation drawer, but the mobile apps are now catching up with this streamlined design.

Meanwhile, the Utilities section has been revamped, with most of its functions now available by clicking on the “+” icon near your profile photo: this shortcut allows you to create new albums, share them with your partner, or import photos from other sources.

This seemingly small update puts the spotlight on Locked Folder and draws the attention of users who may not have known about or used this secure storage feature before. Since we often share our phones with people we trust, but don't necessarily share all of our information, adopting this security tool is a smart move for everyone.
