Google Messages prepares for Apple's RCS support in group chats

Overview Apple is expected to introduce RCS support to iPhones in iOS 18, improving cross-platform messaging. Evidence found in the APK teardown suggests that the Google Messages app is preparing to upgrade existing group chats between iOS and Android users to RCS. The upgrade process will likely be automatic, with a pop-up notification informing users of the change.

Until now, messages between Android and iPhone users defaulted to the older SMS protocol, making text conversations between the two operating systems less secure than other messaging apps that offer end-to-end encryption. Defaulting to SMS also meant that cross-platform chats couldn't take advantage of advanced features like read receipts, typing indicators, and low-compression media sharing.

Cupertino-based Apple has finally bowed to years of pressure from users and manufacturers and announced during its WWDC event that it will bring RCS support to iPhones in iOS 18, scheduled for release in September this year.

We're starting to see the first signs of RCS in Apple's iOS 18 beta 2, giving AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon customers access to the protocol, and as Android Authority shares, Google is starting to prep its Messages app, so we expect many iPhone users will soon be able to send text messages to Android users via RCS.

Code strings found in the latest Google Messages beta app suggest that the application will upgrade existing group chats between iOS and Android users to RCS, which previously defaulted to MMS.

This process will likely be automated.

A teardown of the APK by Android Authority revealed two key flags.

The flag is reportedly responsible for informing users that some group chats have been automatically upgraded to RCS, and a “Chat has been upgraded” pop-up will appear, letting you “send clearer photos and videos with reactions over Wi-Fi for free” in group chats.

It's currently unclear when the feature will be widely available, but it's expected to be ready by Apple's RCS deadline of September 2024.
