Google campus security upgrade: Why some employees aren't happy

Google has begun testing facial recognition technology for security purposes at its Kirkland, Washington campus. The company aims to prevent unauthorized access to its facilities. The company's security team, named Google Security and Resilience Services (GSRS), will use the data to identify potential security risks. The system collects facial data from internal security cameras and compares it to employee badge images. “We have protocols in place to identify, report, and potentially remove known bad actors to keep our employees and spaces safe and secure,” a Google document read, CNBC reported. While the company claims the data is “for immediate use, not stored,” some employees at the Kirkland office have expressed privacy concerns. Business Insider reported that one employee described the new system as “a bit dystopian.” “A lot of people are concerned that Google is storing facial data,” the employee told Business Insider. “The data is very valuable.” But Google says the facial data is only for immediate use and will not be stored. Employees at the Kirkland testing facility cannot refuse a facial scan to enter the building, but they can request that photos of their ID badges not be stored for comparison. Google has faced security challenges in the past, including in 2018 when a woman opened fire at YouTube's San Bruno, California, headquarters, injuring three people. The company has also recently implemented other security measures, including fencing off parts of its Mountain View, California, headquarters. Some employees speculate that the new system is a response to recent protests over a $1.2 billion joint deal with Amazon to provide services to the Israeli government. Those protests have led to arrests and employee firings. A Google spokesperson told Business Insider that the company has been “testing and implementing new systems and protections to keep our employees and spaces as safe as possible” for years.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
