Google's AI push increases emissions and hinders carbon targets

Google's emissions have increased by 48% in five years due to AI integration, making it harder to meet its 2030 carbon targets.

As Google has built artificial intelligence into many of its flagship products, its emissions have increased by nearly half in five years, Bloomberg reported.

The development makes it harder for the tech giant to meet its goal of achieving zero carbon emissions by 2030, according to a new environmental report.

Google's annual report, released on Tuesday, detailed its progress towards meeting its environmental goals last year. The Alphabet Inc. company reported that its greenhouse gas emissions for 2023 reached 14.3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent.

That figure is 48 percent higher than 2019 and 13 percent higher than 2022. Google attributed the increase to higher energy consumption in its data centers and emissions from its supply chain, and noted that the integration of AI into its products could further complicate efforts to reduce emissions.

“As AI is further integrated into products, reducing emissions may be challenging as greater AI computing intensity increases energy demand and emissions from expected increases in investments in technology infrastructure,” Google said in the report.

Google aims to eliminate such emissions from its own operations by 2030. AI, especially generative AI, which creates new content like text, images or songs from user input, is resource-intensive.

A Bloomberg News investigation highlighted the rapid growth of the technology and the accompanying increase in power requirements for data centers.

The massive increase in electricity demand due to Silicon Valley's aggressive approach to AI development threatens to disrupt global energy transition plans, including the clean energy goals of trillion-dollar tech companies.

In countries such as Saudi Arabia, Ireland and Malaysia, the energy needed to run all their planned data centers at full capacity exceeds their available renewable energy supplies, according to a Bloomberg analysis.

Google is not alone in facing these challenges: Microsoft reported in May that its carbon emissions have increased by 30% since 2020 due to increased investments in AI, making it harder to meet its goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2030.

Sasha Luccioni, climate director at startup Hugging Face, said tech companies had not anticipated the massive growth of AI when setting their environmental goals.

“That's just not possible,” she says. “The base year for Google's report was 2019. They definitely didn't anticipate that.” Companies were caught off guard by the massive energy demands required to both build and operate AI technology.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
