Google switches to ultrasonic fingerprint reader for Pixel 9

The Google Pixel hasn't always been perfect, and has had fundamental issues over several generations, most notably the use of outdated camera sensors, the lack of an ultra-wide camera, lack of bezel uniformity, and extremely slow charging speeds.

Thankfully, Google has finally addressed all of these instances, with the Pixel 9 series set to fix another long-standing issue for the Pixel: a somewhat slow and sometimes unreliable under-display fingerprint sensor. Thanks to a source familiar with the matter, Android Authority has learned that Google plans to use an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner on the upcoming device.

Upgrade to Ultrasound

Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority

Google first switched to an under-display fingerprint scanner with the Pixel 6, but before that it had always used a traditional rear-mounted sensor. Unfortunately, the switch didn't go smoothly, with early users reporting issues with both unlock speeds and scanning reliability. Subsequent OTA updates and the next generation of Pixels have improved things somewhat, but unlocking is still relatively slow, and remains that way to this day.

The source of these issues was the choice of fingerprint scanner to use: Google chose an optical scanner from a company called Goodix, while competitors used ultrasonic scanners. Optical scanners are typically slower, less accurate, and more sensitive to moisture and dirt on your finger. They also have issues with use in dark environments: optical scanners require the screen to emit a very bright light instead of the scanner, so if you don't completely cover the circle on the screen, you can be hit by a blinding flash of light.

The ultrasonic fingerprint scanner makes unlocking faster and more reliable.

With the Pixel 9, Google has finally switched to an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner. The specific unit used is the Qualcomms 3D Sonic Gen 2 (QFS4008), the exact same model as found in the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. This is good news, as fingerprint scanners on Samsung devices have always performed well.

While the overall unlocking experience and speed doesn't depend solely on the hardware, ultrasonic sensors will always perform better than optical sensors.

Coming soon to a Pixel near you

The new ultrasonic fingerprint scanner will be present on all Pixel 9 models except the Fold, which has a fingerprint scanner in the power button. Google has confirmed that the Pixel 9 series will be launched on August 13, so it's coming soon.
