Google's new data center will emit 224,250 tonnes of CO2

Google Ireland Ltd's planned new data centre in south Dublin will indirectly lead to annual CO2 emissions of 224,250 tonnes without any mitigation measures.

This is according to planning documents submitted with GIL's application, which warned that if the new data centre project does not go ahead, the company will struggle to meet the growing demand for ICT services to local customers.

The scheme marks the third phase of Google's Ireland Data Centre Campus at Grange Castle Business Park and is expected to create 800 jobs during construction and 50 jobs once operational.

The new 72,400 sq m data storage facility data centre will consist of eight data halls built on a 50 acre greenfield/brownfield site.

A 78-page planning report submitted by ARUP to South Dublin County Council states the proposed development would be “powered through existing connections in accordance with agreement with Eirgrid”.

On the climate impact of data centres, ARUP said the indirect climate impacts of connecting data centres to the national electricity grid could result in 224,250 tonnes of CO2 emissions in 2027, equivalent to 0.44% of Ireland's projected CO2 emissions for that year.

The report states that the duration of the climate impacts is “likely to be short-term as, in line with CAP24, the electricity grid will be 80% renewable by 2030, thereby significantly reducing carbon emissions.”

To mitigate the climate impact of its planned data center and its operations in Ireland, ARUP announced that GIL has signed a 14-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Power Capital Renewable Energy for 58 megawatts (MW) of new electricity to be fed into the grid from the Tullabeg Solar Farm through an existing grid connection.

The solar farm is currently under construction, and ARUP says, “GIL's current projections are that once operational, the PPA will enable Irish offices and data centres to achieve 60% carbon-free energy by 2025, as metered on an hourly basis.”

Commenting on the plans for the new data centre, the planning report said: “Investment in the proposed development will enable GIL to meet the growing demand for ICT services in Ireland. If this project does not progress, GIL will struggle to provide services to its customers.”

The planning report states that the proposed development of the GIL Campus complies with the EE zoning objective for Grange Castle Business Park: “Provide enterprise and employment”.

The report states that the data center building “is designed to be a single storey to reduce building mass and height.”

According to the report, Google Ireland currently employs 9,000 people, making it one of Google Inc.'s largest subsidiaries outside Ireland.

The planning report also noted that “GIL data centres power the digital services that help people and businesses thrive and keep the internet running 24 hours a day.”

Google Ireland aims to begin construction in the fourth quarter of this year and complete in the second quarter of 2027, after a 27-month construction period.
