Major advances and innovations in airport technology were highlighted at the annual International Smart Airports Forum, held in Shanghai's Changning District on Thursday.

The 12th International Smart Airport Development Forum focuses on the rapid growth and future development of China's smart airports.

Xu Qinghong, vice president of the Shanghai Society of Aeronautics, stressed the importance of smart airports.

“Smart airports enhance operations, services and maintenance through intelligence and digitalization,” he said. “China's airport expansion continues steadily, even as business growth slows.”

Xu said at the forum that by 2025, the total length of runways at domestic airports will increase by 30 percent and the number of takeoffs and landings will nearly double compared to 2015.

The forum featured discussions on smart ground transportation, data management and intelligent inspection systems.

For example, Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport has implemented smart systems for parking lot management, taxi operation and whole-process traffic control, which has minimized waiting times by keeping passengers waiting within five to 10 minutes, said Xu Xibin, traffic management manager at Hongqiao Airport.

Xu Qinggong said recent policies have instructed airports to improve efficiency and passenger services through digitalization.

“Smart technology will enable integration with rail and urban transport, enabling seamless, paperless and contactless travel,” he added.
