Google Pixel 9 could get a long-awaited upgrade, borrowed from the Galaxy S24 Ultra

A new upgrade has been teased for the Google Pixel 9, and it's the upgrade that anyone who's used a Pixel in the past few years has been waiting for.

Android Authority's Kamila Wojciechowska reports that Google will be adding an ultrasonic fingerprint reader to the new Pixel — specifically, the same Qualcomm-made unit found in the Galaxy S24 Ultra.

Most phones with under-screen fingerprint scanners, including the current Pixel 8 series, use an optical scanner that uses bright light and a small camera sensor to read your fingerprint. Most of the time, this scanner works fine, but it can malfunction if the screen between the scanner and your finger is damaged or dirty, or if the ambient light is too bright. Ultrasonic sensors, which as the name suggests use sound, are more resistant to these issues.

Wojciechowska claims that the new sensor will be present on three Pixel 9 models, including the Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL and the base model, with the exception of the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, which will feature the power button fingerprint sensor common to foldable smartphones.

Focus on the problem

The under-display optical sensor that Google has used since the Pixel 6 series has had an unfortunate reputation for being buggy and slow to read your finger, or not at all. These issues have been addressed in software updates and in later Pixel models, but replacing the sensor still seems like a good idea, so long as Google implements everything properly the first time.

Made by Google on August 13 is an unusual time for Google to announce new flagship smartphones, but it looks like the Google Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold will debut there. We might also see a new Pixel Watch 3 or the final release of Android 15 there, so it's definitely worth keeping an eye on.
