AstraZeneca expands footprint at Chennai Global Innovation and Tech Centre

CHENNAI: AstraZeneca India Private Limited (AZIPL) has expanded its Chennai-based Global Innovation and Technology Centre (GITC) footprint by investing Rs 2,500 crore and adding an additional 1,300 employees.

The expansion of AZIPL’s Global Capability Centre (GCC) division will enable the company to focus on driving innovation, improving efficiency and streamlining operations across the company worldwide.

The expanded facility was inaugurated on Thursday at a ceremony officiated by Tamil Nadu Industries Minister Dr TRB Raja, British Deputy High Commissioner to India Christina Scott CMG, AstraZeneca's Vice President for Asia Silvia Varela, and AstraZeneca's leadership team in the country. According to Guidance Tamil Nadu, the expansion will make GITC AstraZeneca's largest GCC globally and bring highly skilled research and development jobs that will drive significant growth in the state.

The investment marks a major milestone in AstraZeneca's growth story in India as the company celebrates its 45th anniversary of its India presence this month. The expanded GITC, with the introduction of highly skilled roles by 2025, will drive the company's vision of shaping healthcare outcomes by leveraging technologies such as enterprise platforms, artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science and supply chain analytics, according to a statement.

Industries Minister TRB Raja said Chennai has emerged as the capital of India's Global Competence Centre (GCC), bringing historic levels of office space absorption and quality jobs to the state.
