Google Wallet to support digital passports in the US

Google Wallet offers a new level of convenience. As adoption of the Google-owned mobile payment app grows in the U.S., with a host of banks recently joining, Google Wallet does more than just store your financial information: it makes your wallet even lighter by letting you create an ID Pass with your passport.

A beta version of Google Wallet spotted in May introduced the option to add an e-passport as an ID pass (via Android Authority). The feature guide states that e-passports can be used in Google Wallet at “select TSA checkpoints,” and clarifies that “this is not an official form of ID and is not intended to replace a physical passport.” Now, as spotted by code hunter Assemble Debug on X (formerly Twitter), the feature appears to be ready for rollout.

As you can see in the screenshot below, once the feature is available in the stable version of Google Wallet, you'll be able to add your Passport to create an ID Pass, plus you'll have the option to add your driver's license or state-issued ID.

While the possibility of using your ID Pass to verify your identity at places like airline security checkpoints or online shopping is appealing, it's important to remember that the technology is not foolproof. After you add your e-passport as an ID Pass in Google Wallet, you can verify your identity by connecting your phone to an NFC reader or by scanning a QR code on your ID Pass. However, we recommend that you always carry physical versions of your passport and ID card with you as a backup in case this feature doesn't work.

For now, the ID Pass option is only available to US citizens, and it remains to be seen if Google will expand it to other countries. It's also not yet available in Google Wallet, but is expected to come to the app in a future update.
