Is Google quietly releasing the most requested Google Maps feature to more users?

One of the essential features of any modern navigation app is the speedometer, which allows users to see their speed in real time by simply looking at the screen.

Before you rush into the comments section and call me crazy for saying that's why cars have speedometers mounted on dashboards, here's a fact that most people ignore: Navigation app speedometers are more accurate than your car's speedometer because they display a value calculated primarily using GPS data.

We have explained in detail in another article why GPS equipped speedometers are more accurate, but one thing you should always remember is that having smaller or larger tires can cause your car’s speedometer to give inaccurate readings.

Some people prefer to use their car's speedometer, and that's fine, but others rely on navigation apps because they're already looking at the screen as they follow the suggested route. This kills two birds with one stone, as it tells you how fast you're going and where you need to go next to stay on the route.

Google Maps, the number one mobile navigation app on the planet, lags behind its rivals in this regard. The app also displays a speedometer, but it's only available in a few regions and to a few users. Moreover, the speedometer sometimes disappears from Google Maps, suggesting that the search giant is experimenting with making the feature more widely available worldwide.

It looks like Google has started releasing its long-awaited speedometer to more users, including those who use Google Maps on iPhone and CarPlay. The speedometer has been available mainly on Google's own platform, Android, until now. Recently, several readers have contacted us saying that the feature was not available on their devices, but the speedometer was enabled on their iPhone. One user even told us that the speedometer appears on CarPlay.

I can't confirm if the rollout has started (my iPhone doesn't show a speedometer, and it doesn't show up when I run Google Maps or CarPlay) and I asked around and no one from Google could confirm it, but there are more and more people online claiming that the application now shows the speed you're moving on your iPhone.

Google is yet to make an official announcement on whether the speedometer will be available on other devices, so for now you have to take everything with a grain of salt. If you have noticed this feature on your iPhone or CarPlay, do let me know using the comment box below.

Speed information in Google Maps Real-time speed information is only available to a small number of users (even the entire Android user base does not have the feature), and Google's functionality in this regard is limited to the speed limit of the road you are driving on.

This means that Google Maps won't tell you your current speed or whether you're going over the speed limit, just the speed limit for each section of road. The information is highly accurate and updates in real time as you enter new roads with different speed limits (such as when you enter or exit a highway).

However, if you are particularly interested in speed information while driving, Waze is a better option. The application shows your current speed (which, like Google Maps, calculates your speed based on GPS information) and the speed limit. It also gives you audio and visual warnings if you go over the speed limit, so you should be careful if you are at risk of getting a ticket.

Now, here's the usual warning: while navigation apps can show you driving speeds and road speed limits, you should always (but always) pay attention to road signs. Drivers are solely responsible for their actions behind the wheel. Blaming your navigation for breaking the speed limit is not effective.

Needless to say, if you don't want your navigation app to show you your current speed or the speed limit, and would rather rely solely on your car's speedometer and road signs, you can always disable that feature on your device.

In Google Maps for iPhone, you'll find the speed limit toggle under your profile picture > Settings > Navigation. To hide the speed limit when you enable navigation in Google Maps, you'll need to disable the “Show Speed Limit” option.

If you use Waze, all options are[設定]>[マップ表示]>[スピードメーター]The application has many more options, including the ability to show or hide the speed limit (using only the speedometer), set speed thresholds, and enable or disable alerts when you exceed the limit. The same options are available on iPhone and Android, and if you run Waze with Android Auto and CarPlay, the settings will appear on the large display in your car.

Let us know in the comment box below if Google Maps also shows your current speed on your iPhone or if the speed limit only appears when you are running the app on your phone or CarPlay. Make sure to share the version of Google Maps you have installed on your phone and the area where you use the app.
