The Google Pixel 9 is likely to use the same reliable fingerprint scanner as the Galaxy S24 Ultra

Overview Google is reportedly going to use Qualcomm's 3D Sonic Gen 2 ultrasonic fingerprint scanner on the Pixel 9. Ultrasonic scanners are more reliable and secure than optical sensors. The second generation Pixel Fold will use a capacitive fingerprint scanner.

The Google Pixel 6 was notorious for its poor performance in-display fingerprint scanner made by Goodix. Thankfully, the company made amends for that with the Pixel 7, but it still lags behind the best Android phones in this regard. The Pixel 8 didn't see any notable improvements, but Google added face unlock to the phone, making it less likely to rely on the fingerprint scanner. With the Pixel 9, Google will reportedly fix this critical shortcoming for the Pixel lineup for good.

Android Authority claims that Google will use an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner across the entire Pixel 9 lineup. Specifically, it will use a Qualcomm 3D Sonic Gen 2 (QFS4008) sensor. Samsung also uses the same scanner in its Galaxy S24 Ultra. Qualcomm's sensor product page states that it “creates a detailed 64mm2 replica of your scanned fingerprint” for safety and security.

Google's second foldable smartphone will not feature an ultrasonic sensor and will continue to use a capacitive fingerprint scanner integrated into the power button.

Ultrasonic scanners are more reliable and safer than optical sensors

Until now, Google has used optical in-display fingerprint sensors on the Pixel, which shine a bright light through the display to read your fingerprint. The problem with such sensors is that they don't work properly with dry, dirty or oily fingers. More importantly, they are less secure as they use a 2D scan of your fingerprint to unlock the device. There have been cases where high-resolution printouts of fingerprints have been used to fool optical scanners.

In comparison, ultrasonic scanners send out ultrasonic pulses to capture your fingerprint in 3D, which makes them more secure than optical scanners. They're also more reliable, working with dirty, oily, and dry fingers. A lot depends on Google's software implementation. From a hardware perspective, though, Qualcomm's ultrasonic sensor is a significant upgrade over the optical fingerprint scanners on previous Pixel phones.

For years, Google has used outdated or older generation parts in its Pixel phones, but it appears the company has changed its tune and will use the best parts available for its flagship Pixel phones.

According to a recent leak, the Pixel 9 series may use the same Samsung OLED panels as the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro. The M14 OLED panel may offer higher peak brightness and power efficiency than the Galaxy S24 series.
