Hall: Longview's business community embraces technology and innovation |

The Longview Chamber of Commerce takes great pride in its role in promoting and protecting the interests of businesses in the Longview area.

During tough economic times, many of our members have sought creative ways to keep their businesses afloat, and we've seen innovation at its best as our business community strives not just to survive, but to thrive, setting a powerful example for our fellow Texas residents.

Many of our members are leveraging technology to increase efficiencies, expand their reach to customers, and find innovative solutions to modern problems facing small businesses. From adopting high-tech solutions to expanding their online presence, businesses in our community are leveraging a variety of technology tools to enhance their operations.

In response to a growing recognition that technology is becoming an increasingly integral part of our daily lives, we founded the Longview Technology Council. These collaborative initiatives are designed to support our companies' technology efforts and foster a sense of unity and common purpose within our community.

As an important step in strengthening our technology base, we are working to develop short-term and long-term goals focused on increasing tech expertise in the Longview region and surrounding areas. We know jobs require advanced digital skills: A recent study by Business Leaders United reported that 92 percent of jobs in the United States require digital skills.

We also work to expand technology education opportunities for students of all ages in our community: Recently, students from Pine Tree High School and Big Sandy High School participated in a robotics and engineering competition to showcase their technical skills and promote careers in STEM fields.

Additionally, LeTourneau University and the Longview Economic Development Corporation are collaborating to develop a robotics workforce training program to meet the growing demand for skilled robotics technicians among area manufacturers.

Prioritizing technology skills and education will help lay a strong foundation for the future to ensure economic permanence in the Longview region. This fall, the Chamber's Technology Committee will partner with Kilgore College and area technology companies to host Code!Longview, targeted at middle and high school students throughout the region.

One of the Council's primary goals is to concretely improve the community's technology infrastructure by promoting the adoption of new and innovative technologies and fostering collaboration with local governments and community groups to expand access to high-speed internet and other technology resources to benefit local businesses.

Through carefully planned investments in the region's technology infrastructure, we aim to foster an environment conducive to sustained growth and success for the local business community.

Our consistent focus on technological advancements demonstrates Longviews’ commitment to being at the forefront of innovation and success, paving the way for sustainable growth within our community.

It is critical that state leaders prioritize policies and initiatives that promote access to digital tools and resources so businesses can thrive in an economy that is constantly evolving and increasingly technology-driven. Texas policymakers must invest in infrastructure that supports technological advancements, such as providing broadband access in rural areas, and encourage businesses to invest in technological innovation.
