Google Messages upgrades older chats to RCS following Apple's adoption

Google Messages is set to upgrade its older cross-platform chats, including those with iPhone users, to the RCS messaging standard. The move comes after Apple finally decided to add RCS support to iMessage after years of resistance.

Previously, group chats involving both iPhone and Android users were automatically downgraded to SMS and MMS formats without the advanced features of RCS, but a recently discovered analysis of APK code for a beta version of the Google Messages app suggests that these old conversations may be converted into RCS chats.

It has been confirmed that two flags are required to enable this upgrade feature: “bugle.enable_mms_group_upgrade_ui_home_screen” and “bugle.enable_mms_group_upgrade_ui_conversation_screen”. Once a conversation has been successfully upgraded, users will see a popup notification saying “Your chat has been upgraded”. They will also be informed of the benefits of RCS, such as sending high-resolution photos and videos with reactions. RCS messaging on iPhone (like the green bubble) is expected to come to iOS 18 stable and is already in the works in the latest beta | Image credit: AppleCurrently, RCS support on iPhone is limited to iOS 18 beta, but is expected to roll out more broadly with the stable release of iOS 18 this fall. Importantly, this upgrade to Google Messages is not limited to chats with iPhones, but can also power conversations between Android phones where one of the participants is not using an RCS-enabled app. While this feature is not yet generally available, it marks an important step towards improving cross-platform messaging experiences and aligns with our ongoing efforts to drive adoption of RCS and enhance cross-platform communications.

The upgrade process is automatic and users are notified via pop-up messages, ensuring a seamless transition to RCS and allowing users to enjoy its benefits without the need for manual intervention.

While specific implementation details and timelines are still unknown, the potential impact of this upgrade is substantial: it could significantly improve messaging quality and functionality for millions of users who participate in cross-platform conversations.
