That feature is a speedometer, which is already available to many users who use variations of both Google Maps and Waze for Android. According to autoevolution, the speedometer in the mapping and navigation app that uses GPS is more accurate than the speedometer on your car's dashboard. And some drivers glance at the directions in their navigation app while driving (more on that later), so they can get directions while also seeing how fast they're going at the same time.

Setting up the speedometer feature in Waze

Google appears to be testing a speedometer in Google Maps and CarPlay for iOS, as evidenced by the feature appearing intermittently on some iPhone devices. Just two days ago, an iPhone user posted on Reddit: “On my way to work today, I was using Google Maps on my work phone (iPhone 14 Pro) when I noticed that there was a speedometer feature exclusive to Android. However, when I tested it on another phone (iPhone 14 Pro Max), the feature was nowhere to be seen.”

In some states, it's illegal to have a smartphone while driving, so drivers don't have a legal right to see the speeds displayed on Google Maps. If you don't drive in one of those states, Waze can also show you your speed and warn you if you're speeding. Open the Waze app and tap the three-line hamburger menu in the top-left corner of the screen.
