Google to auto-generate disclosures for synthetic political ads

What's in the news: Google will generate in-ad disclosures for synthetic content in certain forms of political ads, as announced in a company blog on July 1, 2024. Google is also updating its disclosure requirements for advertisers under its Political Content Policy to require them to disclose election ads that contain synthetic or digitally altered content that inaccurately portrays real or authentic-looking people or events. According to the blog post, advertisers can facilitate this by selecting a checkbox in the “Altered or Synthetic Content” section of their campaign settings.

Google will provide disclosure in feed, short videos and in-stream.

Based on the checkboxes selected by the advertiser, Google will generate in-ad disclosures of the following format:

Mobile feeds Mobile short videos In-stream (PC, mobile, mobile web, TV screen)

Advertisers are not required to include their own in-ad disclosures for the specified formats, but must provide a prominent disclosure for all other formats. Although acceptable disclosure language is not specified, examples of disclosures are provided, such as the following:

Altered or synthetic content. This audio was computer generated. This image does not depict actual events. This video content was synthetically generated.

Google has previously suspended political ads in South Korea and the US.

In April 2024, Google announced that it would halt all political advertising in South Korea ahead of the country's general election scheduled for that month. The suspension was reportedly an attempt to prevent the spread of misinformation and curb voter bias on platforms such as YouTube, Google Search, and the Google Play Store.

The company took similar measures in the United States following the 2020 US presidential election and the riots at the US Capitol. However, in mid-November 2023, the company updated its policy on political content to require all verified election advertisers to prominently disclose if their ads contain synthetic content that falsely portrays real people or events, reserving space for political ads on the platform.
