Unexpected changes to Google Photos make some features easier to use, but others harder to use

Google has made some unexpected changes to the layout of your Google Photos library.

Google has made some small but important changes to its Google Photos app to make it quicker and easier to access your most personal photos and videos. Unfortunately, those same changes have also made some other features harder to find.

The update comes in the form of a re-arranged Library tab that replaces the Utility button at the top of the screen with a new button marked “Lock.” This new button gives you quick access to Google's Locked Folder feature, and reminds you to set it up if you don't already have it. By placing the Locked button at the top of the screen next to Favorites, Google makes Locked Folders much more prominent and easier for new users to discover.

Where has the Google Photos utility gone?

This interface change makes it easier to find and access locked folders, but it will leave many Google Photos users wondering where the utility features have gone.

Thankfully, most of these utilities can now be found by tapping the + icon at the top of the screen, where you can create new media like albums, collages, highlight videos, cinematic photos, animations, and more. You can also use this menu to order physical books or prints, set up partner sharing, and import images from other places like iCloud or Facebook.

Using the Utilities menu[空き容量を増やす]If you're accessing the options, tap your profile picture in the top right-hand corner of the screen, then tap[このデバイスの空き容量を増やす]You can find this option by selecting Options.

Another utility that's missing is the option to move photos to the Archive. This feature is now available through the Archive button in the Library tab. Enter Archive and tap the Photos icon with the little plus sign in the top-right corner of the screen. This will bring up a page where you can select the images you want to move to the Archive.

What is the locked folder in Google Photos?

The Locked Folder, released in 2001 exclusively for the Pixel, is a separate, passcode-protected folder where you can store sensitive photos and videos that you don't want visible when someone casually scrolls through your Google Photos library or accesses your photos from within other apps.

Locked Folder has since been rolled out to other Android devices and eventually to iOS users, while last year Google added the long-awaited cloud backup feature.
