No joke, Ersei, a computer science student at Purdue University, managed to boot a Linux OS directly from a drive on a computer with no local storage (via TechSpot). By creating a FUSE RAM disk and loading critical boot components of the OS directly from the drive, Ersei was able to load Linux via a cloud server, but there were some issues to overcome. In a blog post, Ersei explains the coding process for what he calls a “cloud native computer.” This impressive chain of events was all born out of a competitive desire to “beat” the achievement of a friend who had booted Linux from a network file system.

Throughout Ersei's experiment, they had to deal with several issues that required clever thinking to solve, such as avoiding a large number of symbolic links on Drive. When switching to real hardware instead of virtualization, Ersei had to enable their setup to use real Ethernet drivers and change the network settings to match their home network. In the end, they came up with some practical use cases for the OS on the Drive system, such as booting Linux from a Git repository and booting from SSH.
