Ola to discontinue Google Maps, move to in-house navigation system

Bhavish Agarwal-led ride-hailing firm Ola Cabs has shifted to using its own online map, Ola Map, its founder said. “We used to spend Rs 10 crore per year, but this month we have brought it down to zero by fully migrating to our own Ola Map! Check out your Ola app and update if necessary,” Agarwal said in a post on microblogging platform X.

The Bengaluru-based company has been adding features like Street View, Neuro Radiation Fields (NERF), indoor imagery, 3D maps and drone maps to Ola Maps, Agarwal said. The cloud services offered by Crutlim AI will also include application programming interfaces (APIs) for Ola Maps, he added.

The move to the home-grown navigation platform comes six months after Ola Electric commercially launched Ola Maps in January this year. The move to Krutrim AI, founded by Aggarwal, comes after the company opened up its cloud infrastructure and cloud services to enterprises.

The dispute with Microsoft

The decision comes at a time when the company is migrating its entire operations off Azure. The Ola Cabs founder had said in May that the move was in response to Microsoft-owned LinkedIn removing a post of his in which he had labelled the use of the pronoun “they” as a pathology.

The shift to its own platform will help Ola cut losses and further expand Ola Maps.Ola's parent company ANI Technologies reported its consolidated net loss for fiscal year 2022-23 (FY23) nearly halved to Rs 7,722 crore from Rs 15,223 crore the previous fiscal year, while operating revenue rose 42% year-on-year to Rs 2,799 crore.

Agarwal's electric vehicle venture Ola Electric has received Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) approval for its initial public offering, which comprises fresh issue of shares worth Rs 5,500 crore and an offer for sale (OFS) portion of up to Rs 951 crore.
