Researchers discover sub-nanometer chip design

A team of researchers from the Korea Institute for Basic Science has discovered a new technique for creating so-called “one-dimensional” nanomaterials, which they report can produce metal-semiconductor materials just 0.4 nanometers wide.

Researchers at the Korea Institute of Basic Science (IBS) have developed a method to create sub-nanometer semiconductor logic circuits. The team claims that the method allows them to create one-dimensional metallic materials with widths of just 0.4 nm. The technique will enable the development of advanced 2D ultra-small transistors.

Creating such transistor devices poses technical challenges, especially in terms of lithography resolution, but a Korean research team has circumvented this problem by using mirror twin boundaries (MTBs) in molybdenum disulfide as the gate electrode. This was achieved by controlling the semiconductor crystal structure at the atomic level.

This breakthrough is significant as it exceeds the predictions of the International Roadmap for Devices and Systems (IRDS), which had predicted that semiconductor node technology would reach around 0.5nm by 2037. The new transistors are also said to have reduced parasitic capacitance due to their narrower width.

Major chipmakers such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) and Samsung Electronics Co. are exclusively using 3-nanometer processes and are researching 2-nanometer processes. If successfully implemented on a large scale, this technology will become essential for high-performance, low-power electronic devices in the near future.
