Google Pixel Watch 3 is coming soon – with important upgrades

Google has set an August launch date for the Pixel 9 series, which is likely where the Pixel Watch 3 will be unveiled. The smartwatch just passed a key regulatory hurdle in the US and looks set to get at least one significant upgrade.

The Pixel Watch 3's arrival at the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) was spotted by Android Police, but since such filings usually come close to the launch of the associated device, an August debut is very likely at this point.

There are four models in total, codenamed GBDU9, GRY0E, GG3HH, and GGE4J, with two supporting LTE cellular connectivity and the other two only supporting Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, meaning the watch appears to be coming in 41mm and 45mm models (as rumored).

Apparently, there will be support for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi bands, as well as Wi-Fi 6, which is yet another upgrade from the current Pixel Watch 2 and should improve connectivity and performance when connected to wireless networks.

Notably, all four models come equipped with ultra-wideband (UWB) technology for improved short-range connectivity and location tracking — a useful feature already available on the Apple Watch 9, Apple's AirTags, and the latest iPhones.

One use case for UWB would be to better pinpoint the location of lost devices, but unfortunately it's not yet supported by Google's Find My Device network. It could also help improve integration with other devices like Chromebooks and Pixel phones, an upgrade that has been rumored for some time.

Most of the Pixel Watch 3 leaks so far have focused on a new, larger model due to be released this year that will give users size options for the first time with the Pixel Watch, as well as rumors that the smartwatch will come with new sensors.
