As ChatGPT declines, Google's search dominance grows

Just as online search engines have shifted our curiosity from library shelves to computer screens, ChatGPT has undoubtedly changed the way people around the world search for answers to their questions.

Since its debut in 2022, OpenAI's generative artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT has democratized AI. Similar chatbots have spawned from a variety of companies, including Anthropics' Claude, Google's Gemini, and Microsoft's CoPilot. Every big name in Silicon Valley is investing in, developing, or integrating AI into their work.

But ChatGPT isn't likely to unseat traditional Internet search engines, or the reigning king, Google Search, anytime soon. While analysts had feared generative AI would doom Google Search, it's actually done the opposite: Rising advertising revenue from Google Search boosted Google's profits by nearly 60% in the first quarter. And while Google's global search market share rose to 91.1% in June, analysts at Bank of America said Monday that ChatGPT's web visits fell 12%.

But Google Search isn't necessarily a replacement for AI. In fact, Bank of America analysts Justin Post and Nitin Bansal said Google Search is growing in prominence thanks to AI. They said Google's AI outlook could be contributing to the increase in searches, despite issues with its initial rollout. The more Google integrates its AI, called Gemini, into existing products like Google Cloud and Google Search, the better those products will perform, Post and Bansal added.

We remain positive about expanding Gemini integrations across the Google ecosystem and believe that broader rollout of AI overviews may lead to increased adoption, while AI integrations may increase monetization across Google.

But what's good news for Google's pockets is bad news for antitrust compliance. The Department of Justice closed a historic antitrust case against Google in May, accusing the company of monopolizing the digital search market. A verdict is expected in late 2024. Google was hit with another antitrust lawsuit from the U.S. government last January alleging that it engaged in anticompetitive conduct in the digital advertising sector. Google's growing dominance in the search market may not bode well for antitrust regulators.
