Google leak reveals long-awaited Pixel 9 Pro upgrade

Google's next Pixel smartphone is due to launch next month, and new details suggest a long-awaited upgrade will be arriving.

Citing sources familiar with the matter, the Android Authority team reports that all three Pixel 9 devices — the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL — will feature ultrasonic fingerprint readers.

This should make the biometric sensors on upcoming phones more responsive and accurate – the fingerprint readers on recent Pixel devices haven't had a great reception, with Google's support pages being filled with complaints about the sensor, wondering why it's unresponsive and inaccurate.

Current (and older) Pixels use an optical sensor, which as many users have found is weak and by its nature limited to 2D scanning. Moving to an ultrasonic sensor improves the fidelity of fingerprint reading, making unlocking your device more secure and also more accurate when dealing with wet displays and fingers.

The new sensor is not the only upgrade that Google is expected to make to the core hardware of the Pixel 9 series. Display improvements have been spotted in the supply chain. Google may be preparing to use dual-stack technology, which will make the Pixel 9 display brighter, last longer, and consume less power.

Update, Sunday, July 7: Following the latest display details, two new videos online show off a new deep pink version of the Pixel 9. The video from an Algerian retailer shows off the regular Pixel 9 model.

The revamped camera bar is immediately obvious: instead of stretching the entire length of the phone's rear case like on the Pixel 6, 7, and 8 models, the camera bar now has wide, rounded corners and stops short of the edge, matching renders leaked earlier this year.

The camera bar is reminiscent of the design on last year's Pixel Fold, which also houses a dual lens and LED flash, while the larger Pixel 9 Pro is expected to have three lenses, adding a 5x telephoto lens with periscope zoom.

Google is set to hold a launch event on August 9th where it will unveil three Pixel 9 devices and the next generation of Google AI.
