Google Maps is testing a potentially dangerous feature that could lead to it being discontinued

Google Maps has started suggesting sponsored stops to drivers.

As X user Anthony Higman shared, Google's Maps app doesn't hesitate to take a detour to nudge you to visit one of the places that pay for advertising in the app. Higman was prompted to stop at Royal Farms, which has a rating of 2.9.

While you're driving, Google Maps may suggest sponsored stops.

Apparently, these Hangouts are suggested arbitrarily and have nothing to do with your search history, as online ads usually do.

We already have enough advertising all around us, on billboards that appear as we drive along the road and on the websites we frequent, yet somehow Google decided it would be a good idea to serve ads right in front of us while we drive.

The ads are displayed while driving, which can be highly distracting and potentially dangerous, and the popups apparently don't go away unless you tap “Cancel” or “Add Stop.” Given that many people rely on voice commands while driving, tricking them into interacting with the screen could pose a safety hazard.

If sponsored ads appear on Google Maps while you're driving, they can disorient you, especially if you're a new or inexperienced driver.

Google appears to have borrowed this brilliant idea from its subsidiary Waze, which is supposed to only show sponsored suggestions when the vehicle is stationary, but as some users have pointed out, this isn't the case.

It's unclear whether the feature is still being tested or will remain in place — Higman has already vowed to stop using the app if it starts showing sponsored suggestions while he's driving — but not everyone is hating on the feature: One X user said it could be a good way to find new destinations.
