Google plans to offer dark web monitoring to everyone

Google takes and gives. The notorious serial killer, known for killing off services one after the other, has stopped offering its paid VPN. But in the process, the company is also offering its once-exclusive dark web monitoring to all consumer account holders. This new feature is supposed to comb through its global database of leaked information, searching for sensitive information that may have been stolen and leaked online.

Google shut down the VPN on Google One on June 20, instead recommending users to use the latest Pixel 7, Pixel Fold, and Pixel 8 phones, which have a built-in VPN, or a Google Fi wireless plan that offers a virtual private network. When you log into the Google One app, you'll see a new notification that Dark Web Reports will no longer be available on Google One starting in late July.

At first, you might think that Google is getting rid of yet another feature, but the company's related help article states that “Dark Web Reporting will be available to all users with a consumer Google Account.” 9to5Google was first to mention the changes to the Google Ones service.

The Mountain View company plans to integrate Dark Web Monitoring into Google's “About You” search results page later this month. The feature will notify users if their personal information, name, address or phone number appears in search results. Google has previously said it aims to purge personal information from search results, but it cannot proactively remove users' information from third-party web pages. Anyone with a Google account can access both the “About You” search results and the Dark Web Monitoring feature, whether they are a paid user or not.

Previously, if you didn't have a paid account, you could only run a one-time dark web scan on your own email address. With this new integration, users can now monitor other relevant information and receive regular updates when Google discovers dark websites hiding their personal data.

That doesn't mean dark web monitoring can do much if it turns out your personal information has been stolen in a data breach. It will notify you if your name, address, Social Security number, or password is found. It can't remove that information, though. It's up to individual users to change their passwords or freeze their credit once they discover there's a problem.

While Google is busy eliminating some of its paid services, it's good to see that features like Dark Web Monitoring aren't being ignored. If you already have a Google account with access to your address, phone number, and banking information, there are a few reasons not to set up Dark Web Notifications.
