Bad news: Google Pixel 9 will reportedly be more expensive than the Pixel 8

The Google Pixel 8 is one of the more affordable high-end smartphones out there, priced lower than the iPhone 15 and Samsung Galaxy S24. But with the Pixel 9, Google may be looking to bring the price more in line with competitors.

This comes from French site Tomsguide (via GSMArena), who appears to have leaked French prices for the entire Pixel 9 series.

Prices for the Google Pixel 9 itself will likely start at €899 for the 128GB model, going up to €999 for 256GB. By comparison, the Pixel 8 started at €799 and went up to €859 for the same storage capacity.

While it's unlikely that the reported French price can be converted into other currencies to give an accurate figure, it seems likely that the Google Pixel 9 will have a starting price higher than the Pixel 8's starting price of $699 / £699 / AU$1,199.

As for the Google Pixel 9 Pro, it will apparently cost €1,099 for 128GB storage, €1,199 for 256GB, and €1,329 for 512GB. The starting prices are roughly the same as the Pixel 8 Pro, but the 256GB Pixel 8 Pro is cheaper at €1,169, and the 512GB model is also cheaper at €1,289.

With that in mind, the Pixel 8 Pro is likely to be priced similarly, starting at $999 / £999 / AU$1,699, although you may have to pay more for more storage this year.

Next up, we have the rumoured new product, the Pixel 9 Pro XL. Pricing for this model will start at €1,199 and come with 128GB of storage, rising to €1,299 for 256GB, €1,429 for 512GB and €1,689 for 1TB. There's no previous model to compare these prices to, but we expect the Pixel 9 Pro XL to start at around $1,099 / £1,099 / AU$1,849.

The site also lists pricing for the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold (the rumored official name for the Google Pixel Fold 2), which is said to be priced from €1,899 for 256GB of storage, rising to €2,029 for 512GB of storage. These prices are roughly the same as the original Google Pixel Fold, so the starting price for this smartphone is likely to be around $1,799 / £1,749 (around AU$2,655), similar to its predecessor.

The site also claims that the Pixel 9 will come in obsidian (black), porcelain (white), mojito (presumably a light green), and cosmo (an unknown color), while the Pixel 9 Pro will come in obsidian, porcelain, hazel (sage green), and pink. The Pixel 9 Pro XL will reportedly come in obsidian, porcelain, and hazel, while the Pixel 9 Pro Fold will reportedly come in obsidian and porcelain.

All four of these smartphones are expected to be announced at the same event, which will most likely be the Made by Google event on August 13, so we shouldn't have to wait too long for this rumored information to be confirmed (or denied), but until then, nothing is official, so take these leaks with a pinch of salt.
