Mother-daughter team doesn't let paralysis stop them from racing spirit

Like any other three-year-old, Amelia Griffiths Thomas loves water and swimming.

What makes her different from most other young children is that she is paralyzed from the chest down.

Nonetheless, she plans to take part in a three-kilometre swim race on the Ottawa River this weekend with the help of her mother, Ann Griffiths.

The mother and daughter are taking part in Bring on the Bay, an open water race that starts at Nepean Sailing Club and finishes at Britannia Yacht Club, to raise money for Easter Seals Ontario.

“It was important to me to have Amelia involved in this election because she's been excluded from a lot of things in life because of her disability,” Griffiths said. “I just wanted to include her in what I'm doing.”

Griffiths built a small boat for Amelia to glide behind her mother, made of canvas with inflatable tubes on either side and a rope that Griffiths pulled as Amelia swam.

Amelia's life jacket is secured to the vessel so “she can't accidentally be thrown overboard,” Griffiths said with a laugh.

“On the days when she really wants to swim, she's so keen to move the boat forward because she can rock the boat herself.”

So eager is Amelia that Griffiths is putting weights on the stern of the boat to keep it from tipping forward, and her father will be paddling alongside them for extra safety.

“For families without disabilities, a day at the beach is fun and happy, but for us it can be difficult,” Griffiths said.

Moving Amelia's wheelchair across the sand isn't easy, but her love of the water is a big part of making sure she gets there.

Saturday's race will raise money for Easter Seals, a charity that helps children with physical disabilities by providing mobility equipment and other assistance.

Amelia's family has also relied on the charity to buy some of her equipment.

Griffith said she hopes seeing Amelia and other children at the race will inspire people to donate to Easter Seals because they'll see the children who will benefit from their donations.
