Google recently announced that Chrome OS will start using more of the Android stack going forward. While this will take time to fully implement, one change Google has already made is to end development work on its browser, Lacros.

Google began developing the Lacros browser in 2020 and opened it up for testing in 2023. Chromebooks have always had the Chrome browser, but Lacros was meant to separate the browser from the underlying OS for faster updates. The Mountain View tech giant hoped that Lacros would also help improve the overall performance and stability of Chromebooks.

When it was released for testing, several Chromebook users enabled a flag to use Lacros, and it seemed like Google would release the browser any day now. However, it seems the company has decided to end the experiment. In a community post, Google announced that “As we refocus on achieving similar goals by adopting parts of the Android stack in Chrome OS, we have decided to end support for this experiment.”

The post states that Lacross won't be supported on Chrome OS version M128. However, the company says that feedback and testing results from the user community who experienced Lacross helped bring some key improvements to Chrome OS. In the post, Google assures Chromebook users that they won't be affected by this change, adding that Chrome and Chrome OS will continue to receive updates and fixes as usual.
