DRONELIFE EXCLUSIVE: What if we thought of drones as community entities and assets, rather than just robots that fly through the sky and deliver goods and services?

A new way of life: drones as community assets
By Salima Bhimani
Remember the movie Jaws? I saw the first one in the 1980s. After watching it, I was too scared of what was lurking beneath the surface to go in the ocean. But it was about 7 years ago when I started watching videos by TheMalibuArtist, who uses drones to film sharks in their daily lives. My fear turned to curiosity and admiration for these amazing animals that call Southern California home. As an aerial shark spotter, the data The Malibu Artist captures about sharks literally changed the way I feel about the ocean. So it wasn't the drones flying overhead while I was having a family picnic that first piqued my interest in the potential of drone technology, it was the sharks. I didn't know it at the time, but I would go on to work for Alphabet (Google) as their Chief Strategy Officer and Director of Inclusive Technology, Business and Leadership, working for Wing, a subsidiary of Alphabet, the world's leading drone company.
While the sharks are fascinating, what is even more compelling to me are the use cases of drones that are creating opportunities to access resources, knowledge, and skills that are literally changing the direction and opportunities of people’s lives. Consider this real-life scenario: A woman living in a remote village surrounded by harsh terrain is about to give birth to her baby and faces complications. Medical equipment and medicines are hours away. At this critical moment, a drone flies over these obstacles to instantly deliver life-saving supplies. Having given birth to a baby myself a few years ago, I can’t imagine the stress of a mother facing tough physical and medical barriers. Such is the power of drone technology. Zipline, a drone company with operations in North America, Africa, and Asia, was able to enhance hospital blood management systems in Rwanda through drone blood delivery, reducing maternal deaths from postpartum hemorrhage by 51%.
As someone who works with and helps leaders and technology companies build inclusive and responsible innovation and technology, I have come to think of drones not just as robots that fly through the sky and deliver goods and services, but as community entities and assets. And if there is any truth to what I sense, it becomes even more important to think about how drone technology can and should be designed, deployed, and impacted through the lens of responsible technology and AI. There are many definitions of responsible AI and technology today, but here is one I propose for our purposes.
Technology, designed and deployed for people, communities and contexts, improves life outcomes through knowledge, opportunities and resources that were once unattainable.
The expansion of drone technology
The aviation innovation industry is booming, expected to reach a valuation of $50 billion by 2030. A major contributor to this growth is the commercial drone sector, which is predicted to reach $127 billion by next year (2025), creating solutions to problems that may not have been solved otherwise. Given the expansion of the industry and the plethora of solutions drones can unlock for critical problems for people around the world, it becomes even more important that the drone industry continues to hone its skills in responsible AI and innovation.

One important advantage is the speed at which information is sent and received. With the help of the internet, the shopping habits of many persons have drastically changed. The car insurance industry hasn't remained untouched by these changes. On the internet, drivers can compare insurance prices and find out which sellers have the best offers. View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
