Quebec is implementing an innovation plan. Will it pay off?

Our focus in attending the festival, which I often refer to as Canada’s tech summer camp, was to check in on the state of Montreal and Quebec’s innovation ecosystem. Madison McLachlan has been investigating the space closely at BetaKit, tracking not only the demise of Notman House but also the rebranding of Startup Montreal to Quebec Tech and the local community’s response to both.

You need that push to compete with American startups or Israeli startups or European startups, and that push comes with bureaucratic costs, because governments want to know how their money is being spent.

Underlying (or driving) many of these changes is the province's C$7.5 billion research and innovation strategy, which focuses on boosting productivity and fostering sustainable, globally scalable research and development, including picking winners from innovation zones to accelerators to export-ready startups.

Unravelling the impact of this strategy and how it intersects with other political decisions on a more cultural level is none other than MAIN's Executive Director, Louis-Felix Binette, who does a great job of explaining the entire local ecosystem to out-of-town visitors.

While Binet provides historical context for many of the province's decisions, he doesn't actually defend the province. He comes across as someone who would rather work hard with the cards he's been dealt than complain to the dealers. As the person responsible for helping connect more than 50 incubators and accelerators across Quebec, that makes sense.
