SA Innovation Campus marks Mandela Day with tech skills offering

Empire Partners Foundation’s Innovation Campus has combined philanthropy with skills development to launch a community activity to mark Nelson Mandela International Day.

Nelson Mandela International Day is an annual international day commemorating Nelson Mandela, celebrated on Mandela's birthday, 18 July. The United Nations officially established the day in November 2009, and the first UN Mandela Day was held on 18 July 2010.

The Innovation Campus initiative is scheduled to take place between July 17-29, 2024, when the tech nonprofit will distribute clothing and help develop tech talent at New Jerusalem Orphanage in Midrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, the group said in a statement.

According to the campus, its efforts will “add value to the ethos of corporate social responsibility by making a positive contribution to the digital technology industry and nurturing the next generation of tech talent for the industry.”

Innovation Centre CEO Simbarashe Mhlanga said the Fourth Industrial Revolution required more effort: “We must spread the digital gospel so that no one is left behind in this industrial transformation.”

Mhlanga said the campus sees great promise in artificial intelligence (AI)-powered solutions that address societal issues such as education, climate change, unemployment, poverty and access to healthcare.

To this end, the Sandton-based Innovation Campus is collaborating with like-minded organisations that are leveraging AI to sustain livelihoods, enhance financial inclusion tools and advance data-driven healthcare.

Mhlanga further said that inspired by the potential of young African tech innovators, the campus would support initiatives and “have a positive impact across the continent”.
