In a recent episode of Google's “Search Off The Record” podcast, Zoe Clifford from the rendering team joined Martin Splitt and John Mueller from Search Relations to discuss how Google handles JavaScript-heavy websites.

Google has stated categorically that it will show all websites in its search results, even if the site relies on JavaScript.

Rendering process explained

In the context of Google Search, rendering involves using a headless browser to serve up web pages, Clifford explained.

This allows JavaScript to run and allows Google to index the content that is displayed to the user after the page has fully loaded.

“By running the browser through the indexing pipeline, we can index the same view that a user sees after a web page is loaded and JavaScript is executed.”

All HTML pages have been rendered

One of the most important revelations from the podcast is that Google renders all HTML pages, not just some. Despite being a resource-intensive process, Google has adopted this approach to ensure comprehensive indexing.

Clifford confirmed:

“It will render everything as long as it's HTML, not some other content type like PDF.”

The team also discussed Google's 2019 shift to using the “Evergreen Googlebot.”

This update ensures that Googlebot, Google's web crawling bot, stays up to date with the latest stable version of Chrome.
