How to use Google's Dark Web Report for free
Good news for those with a Google account: Starting at the end of July 2024, the handy security features that previously required a Google One subscription will be available for free to everyone.
That feature is the Dark Web Report, and it's bundled with another related feature called “Results About You.” These two features are intended to give you more control over your personal information on the web.
Dark Web reports (from hidden parts of the web) will now be displayed alongside your findings (from standard parts of the web) in a new-look interface. We'll focus on the Dark Web reports here. Currently, this feature is only available to US English accounts, but we expect to make it more widely available soon.
What is a dark web leak? The Tor Browser is one way to access the dark web. Screenshot: Tor
For those of you who aren't familiar with the dark web, it's a small subset of the deep web, which is essentially everything that doesn't show up in a Google search or load in your web browser, including everything from your company's internal network to your Gmail archive (which you definitely don't want showing up in a Google search).
The Dark Web has websites like the regular web, but they are often hidden and difficult to access. You need special software to access them and special search engines to explore them. The Tor Browser is one tool you can install to peek into the Dark Web and find out what's out there.
However, be careful: the dark web is not user-friendly by design. It is designed to be difficult to access and is riddled with unwholesome content. While the dark web has its good uses, for example in countries where internet activity is censored and monitored, its anonymity and secrecy tends to attract various forms of illegal activity.
For example, when hackers sell large amounts of leaked data, they often do so on the dark web, rather than on places like eBay or Etsy (where there is too much scrutiny). This is where the Dark Reports that Google creates come in handy, alerting you whenever your data, such as names, email addresses, or addresses, appears.
Google hasn't revealed specific details about how it searches the dark web — presumably to ensure that those posting information don't evade Google's scrutiny — but it's clear that the company is using some of its search know-how to shed light on darker, less visible corners of the internet.
How does the Dark Web Report work? Google will show you your leaked data and give you advice on what to do about it. Screenshot: Google
Dark Web Report is currently available to all users with a Google One plan, which starts at $2 per month and includes features like extra storage for services like Gmail and Google Photos, as well as other perks, like priority support and access to more advanced AI features.
Currently, Dark Web Reports can be configured through your Google One dashboard on the web, and once the feature is rolled out to free accounts, it will become part of the “Results For You” interface and will function in the same way.
If you haven't already set up your Dark Web Report,[設定]Click[ダーク ウェブ レポート]Under the heading[監視を開始]On the next screen, you can specify what personal data you want Google to monitor. Some information is already included as part of your profile, but you can add new details if you want.
Once the service is set up, you can find it under Dark Web Reports[表示]You can click to see what results Google found (you can also receive email alerts about breaches). You can click on a result to see what type of information was leaked and the type of breach. A breach could be a data leak of a specific site or service, or it could be a large package of data that hackers are trying to sell.
Unfortunately, you can't “unleash” your data once it's been exposed, but Google will provide advice on how to deal with the leak, such as strengthening the security of your account (such as two-factor authentication) or strengthening spam protection on your phone and various apps.
