Google Maps cuts developer prices by 70% after offering Ola Maps for free

Google has slashed prices of its Google Maps platform for developers in India by up to 70% from August 1 as it rolls out a new country-specific pricing structure.

The company also announced that it will start accepting payments for Google Maps subscriptions in rupees. Currently, it only accepts payments in US dollars.

Google also announced that it would offer a 90% discount to developers working with the Open Digital Commerce Network (ONDC), a state-run enterprise under the Ministry of Promotion of Industry and Trade (DPIIT) aimed at developing open e-commerce.

Google Maps' big price cuts come after Agarwal called on Indian startups to use local alternatives such as Olamap, which the company is offering all developers free access to for one year.

MapMyIndia is another local alternative to Google Maps. This move is noteworthy as Google Maps has never lowered its prices in India and experts see this as an attempt to protect its market share and leadership position in the country.

Earlier this month, Agarwal said Ola Cabs had ditched Google Maps entirely in favor of its own OlaMap, a move he said would save Ola Rs 1 billion annually.
