A quick introduction to Google Photos' “Ask Photos” [Gallery]

One of Google's upcoming AI features is “Ask Photos” in the Google Photos app, which will allow users to use generative AI to quickly gather information from their photo library. While the feature hasn't been rolled out yet, here's a quick look at what it will look like within the app.

To summarize what “Ask Photos” does, it's similar to Google Photos' existing powerful search feature, but on top of it. Google showed how it would work earlier this year with a quick demo in which a user asked Photos to show them “the best photos of the national parks you've ever visited.” It sounds like a pretty useful idea.

Now, we know a bit more about how Google plans to implement this feature.

A reader briefly accessed “Ask Photos” on a Pixel 8 Pro today, but it didn't appear on any other devices, and the Google Photos app said it was part of a “pre-release” study. Judging by the disclaimer we saw, it looks like Google is trying to get feedback from some users, but it's unclear how extensive this “study” will be.

“Ask Photos” will, unsurprisingly, appear in the search tab of the Google Photos app. A prominent “Ask” button with the Gemini logo will appear next to the search bar, above some familiar faces and image categories. This is a new feature, and Google previously surfaced it as a dedicated tab within the app, though it noted at the time that the design was “subject to change.” “Ask Photos” also sees a new page where the app asks users to name more people in their library.

The page, which appears to differ from Google's previous description of the feature, asks, “What would you like to see?” and allows you to choose a sample prompt or write your own question. Unfortunately, the sample prompt, “Photos of me over time,” didn't work, and the feature disappeared from readers shortly thereafter.

It's still unclear when Ask Photos will be released, but its brief availability as part of this “research” suggests that a launch is relatively near — Google previously said the feature would be coming “in the coming months.”
