One jar of salsa can cost thousands of dollars to clean up this town's public pool.

NEEDHAM, Mass. (TMX) – A rule-breaker who brought a jar of salsa to a public pool in Massachusetts is causing a headache for city officials, costing them thousands of dollars in cleanup.

Residents are outraged, as many of them use the pool for swimming lessons, team practices, fitness and a break from the heat.

A deep pool used for swimming at the Rosemary Recreation Complex in the Town of Needham was closed Sunday after a salsa bottle broke, sending shards of glass into the pool, according to a release from the Needham Parks and Recreation Department.

The smaller family pool and splash pad were not affected.

Massachusetts Sen. Becca Rausch said on Facebook that fixing the problem would require draining the pool, pressure washing it, refilling it, balancing the chemicals and testing for bacteria levels, which could cost up to $20,000.

“The loss of both the pool and your wallet is all because of one person deciding to bring a jar of salsa to the pool,” Rausch said. “Don't bring glassware to the pool. This rule and others like it aren't hard to follow. They are there for the enjoyment and personal health and safety of all of us.”

City officials announced they would open two lap lanes at the Family Pool for morning lap swimming and would host morning swim classes at the Family Pool. Swim team practices have been canceled until further notice, as have regularly scheduled morning stroke clinics.

The family pool remains open, but city officials warned it will be very busy for the next few days.

“We understand this closure will be frustrating for many, as it is for us, but we will continue to work as quickly as possible, keeping safety in mind at all times,” officials said.

Photos shared by the Parks and Recreation Department on Tuesday showed workers cleaning the empty pool.
