Why doesn't Google Maps in CarPlay show my speedometer?

Google Maps has had some big updates over the last few years, so it's unlikely anyone would have expected a small change like the addition of a speedometer to have such a big impact among users. Google first introduced the speedometer to Google Maps for Android devices a few years ago, and promised to bring it to Apple CarPlay in the near future. However, the speedometer never made it to CarPlay, and Google Maps only showed the speed limit for the road you were driving on.

The Mountain View-based search giant began enabling a speedometer in Google Maps earlier this month, and CarPlay users obviously weren't expecting it. But everyone loves the new speedometer, which appears on screen next to the speed limit, making it easier to avoid breaking the limit and avoid getting a ticket.

At this point, I know what most of you are thinking: people who rely on Google Maps shouldn't be driving in the first place, since there is already a speedometer on their dashboard. I partially agree with this idea, but drivers should always follow the information provided by their vehicle and adjust their speed according to road signs, so the speed data displayed by Google Maps can also be trusted.

Google Maps uses GPS to calculate speed, and the value it displays is more accurate than the value displayed in the instrument cluster. The reason is simple: the GPS-based method uses a formula to calculate speed, while the instrument cluster data can change due to tire size, tire pressure, and other vehicle modifications made to the tires.

Speedometer in Google MapsThe addition of a speedometer brings Google Maps on par with other popular navigation apps such as Waze.

Waze, also owned by Google, always displays a speedometer on the CarPlay screen, even when navigation isn't enabled. Waze also displays the speed limit for the road you're driving on and gives audio and visual alerts if you exceed the limit.

Previously, Google Maps only showed the speed limit, even though the company clearly owned the data needed to show current speeds (a feature already available on Android devices).

The speedometer will be included along with traffic information in CarPlay, bringing Google Maps closer to Waze in terms of functionality, and Apple users will be able to report traffic jams, accidents, lane closures, and other hazards while driving.

Why you can't see the speedometer in Google Maps on CarPlay The speedometer has become one of the most anticipated updates to Google Maps on CarPlay, so it's no wonder that many users are confused because they can't find the new option in the app.

The World Wide Web is filled with questions from Google Maps users whose speedometer won't show up in CarPlay, with similar posts appearing everywhere, including Google's forums ( here , here , and here – these are just three examples, but you can also find similar questions on X, Facebook, and reddit).

The reason you can't see the speedometer on Google Maps yet is because the company is using a phased rollout model to enable the feature across its user base.

This means that while the feature has already rolled out to the first devices, it will take some time before it is available to all users. This is the approach Google often takes with new features in its apps, to gradually make new features available to users around the world in order to determine and iron out any issues that may arise before making it widely available.

One important thing to know is that the speedometer in Google Maps is not tied to any specific app update. Simply put, once you install the latest Google Maps update (or downgrade to a specific version, although this is more difficult in the Apple ecosystem), the speedometer will no longer appear. Google enables the speedometer with a server-side switch, so the rollout is controlled remotely, without including the feature in any specific update.

If you don't see a speedometer in Google Maps (the app only shows a setting to enable or disable speed limits), it means you're not among the first users to get the feature. Google usually increases availability every few weeks, so it probably won't be long before the speedometer appears on your device.

The next question you're probably asking is, “How can I force enable the speedometer in my car?” The answer is simple but tedious: you can't do anything. This feature is available based on a server-controlled rollout, so you can't enable it on your device. So, you'll just have to wait for Google to enable the feature on iPhone and CarPlay.

The search giant hasn't announced when the Google Maps speedometer will be widely available on CarPlay, but if you really can't wait for the feature, Waze already offers it. You can temporarily replace Google Maps with Waze to use the speedometer and check from time to time if the search giant has enabled the feature.
