Pixel 9 Pro XL leak confirms new modem and 16GB RAM

With Google's Pixel 9 series unveiled less than a month away from its release, a new hands-on leak shows off the Pixel 9 Pro XL with a new Samsung modem and plenty of memory.

In April, two new details about the Pixel 9 Pro series emerged. First, a hands-on leak revealed the device's bootloader, with storage upgraded to 128GB and RAM to 16GB. Prior to this, no Google Pixel device had more than 12GB of memory. In addition to that, the report claimed that the device would use the updated Samsung modem, the Exynos 5400, which Samsung announced in the same month.

Now we have further confirmation on both.

Another hands-on leak posted to the XDA forums shows what appears to be an early version of the Pixel 9 Pro XL (seen by codename “komodo”) with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. We don't know if this is Google's base model, but it's very interesting to see both the 128GB and 256GB variants. This suggests that Google may be planning to include this much memory in all versions. However, that's not all that far-fetched, as AI is an increasing focus for Google, and on-device AI tends to be very memory-hungry.

Additionally, the leak also provides direct evidence that the device is using the Exynos 5400 modem, which is listed under the “Baseband” section, with “5400” listed instead of “5300” as seen on the Pixel 8 series, which used the Exynos 5300 modem.

Samsung says the Exynos 5400 is based on the latest 3GPP Release 17 standard, with a maximum data throughput of 14.79Gbps. While we're unlikely to see that speed in the wild, we expect Google to use the 5400's satellite support. The new modem is also based on the 4nm process, just like the Tensor G4. This same modem is expected to be used across Google's Pixel 9 series.

Google is scheduled to officially launch the Pixel 9 series on August 13th, and last weekend released official images of the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro Fold.
