Auction house Sotheby's announced the sale on Wednesday after the price soared from the pre-auction estimate of $6 million to $9 million.

A dinosaur fossil believed to be one of the most complete ever discovered has been sold to a private buyer.

The price significantly surpassed the previous auction record, set in 2020 by a Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton nicknamed Stan, which sold for $31.8 million (US$47.7 million).

“Apex has roamed the Earth for some 150 million years and has made its mark on history,” said Cassandra Hatton, head of Sotheby's scientific practice.

The sale of dinosaur fossils has sparked frustration among paleontologists, who believe specimens should remain in museums and research centers that can't afford the high prices they command at auction.

Sotheby's said the unnamed buyer is American and that it plans to explore leasing Apex to a U.S. institution.

The buyer beat out six other bidders.

Stegosaurus is one of the most distinctive dinosaurs in the world, with its triangular, pointed back plates and spiked tail, and lived during the Late Jurassic period about 150 million years ago.

Apex, who stood 3.3 metres tall and measured 8.2 metres from nose to tail, had lived so long that he was showing signs of arthritis, according to Sotheby's.

A commercial paleontologist named Jason Cooper discovered the fossil in 2022, perhaps unsurprisingly, on his own land near the town of Dinosaur, Colorado.

This small community is located near Dinosaur National Monument and the Utah state line.
