Rather than just improving on existing alloys, Soluterials has developed a new aluminium material, SoluteriAL, that takes an entirely new approach: it is made from recycled aluminium using a special mechanical process, avoiding the environmental impact of mining and requiring no rare earth additives.

Additionally, SoluteriAL is strong, electrically conductive, resistant to corrosion, can withstand high temperatures, and is engineered to maintain its strength and resist deformation even when exposed to high temperatures and stress over extended periods of time – something other aluminums cannot do – and it is 100% recyclable.

Nlcomp (Italy)

Nlcomp is focused on research and development of recyclable composite materials and is using its patented rComposite technology to address the end-of-life issues of fiberglass boats.

This year, Nlcomp launched the ecoRacer 30, the world's first recyclable production boat that employs a thermoplastic matrix instead of traditional thermoset resins, making it easier to recycle at the end of the boat's lifecycle and significantly reducing the environmental impact.

Zampla (UK)

Xampla was spun out of Cambridge University's Knowles Lab in 2018 and launched its first consumer brand, Morro, this year.

Morro Soluble Film is a natural alternative to traditional plastic films such as PVOH, a synthetic petrochemical-based material often used in packaging for dishwasher tablets and laundry detergent. Morro Edible Film is a food-grade packaging that is an alternative to single-use plastic packaging. The company partnered with Gousto to develop packaging for the world's first edible soup cubes made from plant protein. They sold out within an hour of launch. PrintyMed (Latvia)

PrintyMed uses bacterially produced spider silk to create scaffolds for tissue engineering. These scaffolds can be used for a variety of applications, including building cardiac fibers, artificial nerves, artificial menisci, and artificial bones. The technology could potentially be used in medical procedures such as skin reconstruction and bladder repair.

Perfatto (Finland)

Perfat Technologies aims to replace or reduce reliance on unhealthy saturated fats. The company's technology enables the widespread use of healthy vegetable oils such as rapeseed and sunflower oil, which were previously limited in food production due to a lack of technical functionality.

This offers a healthier, more sustainable alternative to traditional solid fats such as butter, palm oil and coconut oil.
