Web5 decentralized web nodes come to Google Cloud

Web5 decentralized web nodes come to Google Cloud

Web5 Decentralized Web Nodes are now available in a managed service run by the Decentralized Identity Foundation using Google Cloud technology. If this doesn't shut up most people as a dinner party opening discussion topic, few will. So what does this mean and why does it matter?

Web5 began as an effort to encourage users to take greater ownership of their data. The freedom to own and manage data independent of third-party resources and data services is achieved through the use of decentralized identity and web nodes. A decentralized identity system consists of three pillars or elements: blockchain, verifiable credentials (VC), and decentralized identifiers (DIDs).

Web5 allows for (usually) stricter identity management for decentralized applications that run on peer-to-peer networks (such as blockchain) on which other developers can further build services. As an evolution of the Web3 movement that ushered in Semantic Web services with more advanced AI, we are rapidly moving past the symbolic (autonomous and decentralized) Web capabilities of Web4 and moving towards Web5.

From Web3 to Web4 to Web5

To put it as simply as possible, while Web3 brought us AI and Web4 enabled decentralized connectivity between humans and machines, Web5 delivers all of the above with greater control over identity and data.

Decentralized application development is well suited to social media, some gaming apps, decentralized finance, and other cutting-edge adoption use cases, and it's also a key component of Web5, which is driving growing interest in the technologies that facilitate it. Web5 is fundamentally open source and is the centerpiece of the Decentralized Identity Foundation (DIF), a non-profit organization hosted within the Linux Foundation that is working to develop the foundational components of an open, standards-based decentralized identity ecosystem for people, organizations, applications, and devices.

Decentralized Web Nodes (DWN) are personal data stores that remove the need for individuals to trust apps to use and protect their data responsibly; instead, the data is owned and controlled by the individual. With this basic contextualization and clarification out of the way (and your dinner party guests eager to hear more), what is actually happening in this space right now?

Web5 DIF DWN (on Google)

As mentioned above, Web5 DWN is currently available from DIF running on Google Cloud. This service enables existing and new Google Cloud customers to build test applications using Web5 DWN. Developers can now build test applications using DWN on Google Cloud, rather than running their own DWN or server infrastructure to store data.

Web5's decentralized web nodes are a paradigm shift in how people, apps and services exchange data with each other, said Daniel Büchner, head of decentralized identity at TBD, a division of Block, one of the companies building the DWN specification standard within DIF. In a Web5 world, consumers, not centralized authorities, own and control their data, so they can decide how it is stored, shared and accessed. They can choose to encrypt it just for themselves, allow it for certain groups, or make it public for everyone. But to truly own all of their data, they need a personal data storage system. Even if an individual chooses to use a provider to host one of the DWeb nodes, their private data will be encrypted so it is only available to them and those they authorize access to it.

Enabling Truly Serverless Apps

DWN is a personal data store and peer-to-peer communication node that serves as the foundation for decentralized apps and protocols. It resides on device and can be replicated to cloud-hosted instances. These data stores are said to be an enabler of true serverless applications, allowing developers to store app data without centralized servers or accounts to centralized services. This allows individuals to take ownership and control of their data by hosting it themselves on DWN, decoupling them from apps that ask for permission to read and access their data.

“DIF is excited to work with TBD and Google Cloud to bring this effort to life,” said Kim Hamilton Duffy, executive director of the Decentralized Identity Foundation. “DWN Community Nodes provide a jump-start for developers to build products and services that give individuals control over their data by design. Consumers will experience amazing moments with applications that offer unprecedented personalization, security, and trust, and will come to expect this new standard in all their digital interactions.”
